Why Fall Is Chatterbait Season: Fishing the Z-Man Chatterbait Elite Evo and Other Bladed Jigs

Why Fall Is Chatterbait Season: Fishing the Z-Man Chatterbait Elite Evo and Other Bladed Jigs

Fall is when a bladed jig earns its spot on the deck. One fall guide puts mid-fall water temps of 71 to 60 degrees as the peak window. In that range, fish can show up in 1 to 4 feet of water right against the bank, and creek channel edges in 8 to 12 feet are the most consistent staging areas. That is exactly the water a vibrating jig covers well.

Why Bladed Jigs Work in the Fall

Bass are following bait toward the bank. Anglers should focus on shallow areas in the fall as bass follow bait toward the shore. They are also eating hard. Bass know winter is around the corner and are looking for as many calories as possible. A bladed jig gives you three things at once. It has a shad-sized profile and a blade that throws vibration and flash. It also comes through grass, wood and docks with a hook that stays mostly out of trouble, so you can cover a lot of bank quickly.

Don't write it off in clear water. A Wired2Fish October rundown notes that chatterbaits are typically reserved for stained water or heavy cover, but bass will also respond in open, clear water as long as the bait isn't too gaudy. The same piece pairs a 3/8-ounce Spot Remover blade with a smaller 4-inch DieZel MinnowZ in Bad Shad for a realistic look. Greg Hackney's October list in Louisiana also has a Thunder Cricket or bladed jig as his number two bait.

The Z-Man Chatterbait Elite Evo

The Z-Man Chatterbait Elite Evo is the one I'd put on the deck first. It was voted ICAST 2023's Best Freshwater Hard Lure by angling media and tackle buyers. It comes in 3/8 and 1/2 ounce. The patented direct head-to-blade connection and hex-shaped ChatterBlade start vibrating right away, so you get action the moment you start reeling. The skirt is wire-tied, the eyes are oversized, and the 5/0 black nickel needlepoint hook was outlined by Stephen Browning, with easier freeing from snags, particularly on wood, in mind.

Z-Man's Elite Evo page currently flags new colors: Tickled Pink, Copper Gill, Fire Craw, and GP Melon. If you fish heavy grass or braid, Z-Man also released the Z-Man Chatterbait Elite Evo HD in July. Pull testing showed it is more than 40 percent stronger than the original Elite Evo.

The Tournament Side

The bigger Z-Man family has had a big year. In March, Takahiro Omori won on Lake Hartwell with a JackHammer paired with a 5-inch DieZel MinnowZ, and six of the top ten anglers used Z-Man ChatterBait lures. In April, the JackHammer powered the top three finishers at the MLF REDCREST on Table Rock Lake. For fall, Z-Man and Evergreen added four JackHammer colors in 3/8 and 1/2 ounce: Cold Shad, Secret White, Morizo Pink, and Pumpkin Gold. The Z-Man ChatterBait Jack Hammer is the pricier, hand-tied option when you want it.

How To Fish It:

  • Steady retrieve, just over cover. Cast past the target and keep the blade working. Let it tick stems, stumps and rock. The bite often comes right after contact.
  • Stop and go. A steady retrieve, a sudden stop, then a twitch of the rod tip before reeling again mimics baitfish. Use it when fish follow but don't commit.
  • Slow roll deeper edges. Work creek channel edges and the points leading into creeks with the 1/2 ounce, and let it flutter down near rock or brush.
  • Downsize to match the bait. Downsizing your baits to match the hatch helps when the bass are on small shad.

For color, go with shad patterns (Citrus Shad, Golden Shiner, Spot Remover) in clearer water and bluegill or craw patterns (Bluegill, Bama Bream, Bama Craw) near wood and grass. Z-Man's Brett Hite calls Golden Shiner a great all-around color, not just a Florida special. If the bank is pressured and the bass have seen plenty of blades, try a different look. Z-Man's own fall release says showing bass something they haven't seen before can be the difference on ultra-pressured lakes.

Trailers

The trailer sets the bait's size and how it moves. The Elite Evo's hybrid split-grip and wire keeper system locks down soft plastic trailers, including the Z-Man ChatterSpike. Here is how I'd match them to fall conditions:

Thread the trailer on straight, centered on the hook, and trim long tails so the bait runs true. A crooked trailer makes the bait roll.

Other Bladed Jigs

The Picasso Gen 2 Shock Blade has a direct-attach blade, an Arkie-style head and a Gamakatsu 3/0 hook. The maker describes an instant vibration with an intermittent, unpredictable kick out action. It is made in the USA and skips well under docks. The Strike King Thunder Cricket was designed by Kevin VanDam, Greg Hackney and Andy Montgomery. It comes in 3/8 to 3/4 ounce. Todd Faircloth fishes it around grass or other vegetation and skips it under docks.

What It Means for You

Over the next few weeks, with water in the 60s and bait in the pockets, put a bladed jig in your hand and fish the shallow bank first. Carry two sizes (3/8 for fast and shallow, 1/2 for slow rolling edges), a shad color and a craw or bluegill color, and a few trailer styles. If you get follows but no bites, change the trailer or the color before you change the bait.
