The Daiwa Tatula 100 TWS Baitcasting Reel is one of the newest members of Daiwa's Tatula Baitcasting Series of fishing reels. All in all, this series of reels strikes a really good balance between size, features, component quality, and price point. For example, while this thing's got a low MSRP, it casts and operates like a $400 reel. How is that possible? Daiwa ingenuity, plain and simple.
Now, you may be asking yourself: "Okay, what the heck does that mean?" "Everyone's always talkin' about how 'smart' and 'ingenious' their designs are, but I'm no engineer, how do I know it isn't a bunch of marketing BS?" And you'd be right to wonder; reel makers like to talk a big game, and unless you're an engineer, mechanic, or a well-seasoned angler, it can be hard to tell if a reel can really "cash" the proverbial "checks" the marketing team is writing.
Thankfully, the fine folks at Daiwa don't play like that. The beauty and ingenuity of their designs is so self-evident that you don't need to be a rocket scientist to appreciate, enjoy, and most importantly, understand them.
Take this reel's size for example, when you first pick it up it's immediately obvious just how compact and "palmable" it is. That's because the engineers at Daiwa specifically designed this reel to be the smallest, lightest (weighs only 6.9 ounces) Tatula baitcaster ever put on the market. The purpose of that is two-fold: 1) the small size makes it easier for younger anglers (such as those on high school or collegiate fishing teams) to palm and handle the reel effectively. And 2) according to Elite Series Tour Pro Brent Ehrler, this reel's small size, in conjunction with its clutch and gearing, make it extremely sensitive. Its light, compact design and ultra-smooth gearing allow you to feel exactly what's going on with your line and lure, something any angler can appreciate. This sensitivity also opens this baitcaster up to more light line/finesse applications, a role often reserved for spinning gear.
It's small size isn't its only selling point though. The new Tatula 100 series was developed over years of design and testing and employs many of Daiwa's innovative technologies, such as a rigid aluminum frame and side plate for reliable, squeaky smooth performance. The time-tested "T-Wing System" level wind allows you to make longer, more accurate casts and prevents backlash and built-in "Zero Adjust" technology also means this reel is ready-to-rock right out of the package, no drag or brake adjustment required (nonetheless, these can still be tuned to your own custom specifications). The handle also utilizes comfortable new soft-touch knobs.
The Tatula 100 Baitcasting reel is available in 6.3:1 and 7.1:1 gear ratios in both Left and Right Hand retrieve models and a blazing fast 8.1:1 gear ratio in a Right Hand retrieve only. She's a reel nice lookin' baitcaster too, finished with a dapper-looking matte black finish and emblazoned with laser-etched custom Tatula Spider graphics.
